Social Welfare & Community Department

The department exists to promote and improve the living standards of people in the district — and disadvantaged sections in particular — through initiatives and active participation.

It protects the rights of the minority and vulnerable, and builds capacity, social justice, and equity, achieved through community engagement and mobilisation, sensitisation and education, and social protection intervention implementation and evaluation.

The department promotes socio-economic well-being with a primary focus on assisting the vulnerable and socially excluded, building on their own initiatives and assets — guided by professionalism, dedication, a sense of equity, reliability, empathy, respect for human dignity, and integrity.

Programmes & Activities of the Department

    Support families and individuals in handling non-child maintenance cases, child abuse, custody, paternity, and family reconciliation.

    Identify and register Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
  3. 3
    Facilitate livelihood empowerment programmes and support for PWDs.
  4. 4
    Facilitate the implementation of Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) activities.
  5. 5
    Supervise, monitor, and facilitate the registration of Day Care Centres.
  6. 6
    Intervene in cases of children in the worst forms of child labour.
  7. 7
    Supervise and monitor implementation of the School Feeding Programme.
  8. 8
    Handle domestic violence and spousal abuse cases.
  9. 9
    Undertake sensitisation and social education on social problems.

    Undertake community entry processes for programme initiation, monitoring, and evaluation.

    Promote entrepreneurial skills, business support services, and links to financial institutions for beneficiaries of skills training programmes.

    Mobilise community members for communal labour and self-help projects.

    Promote women's empowerment activities and gender issues.
  14. 14
    Organise community members to collect inputs for preparing the budget and medium-term development plan.
