The Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation
and the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, has held a community engagement with residents of Adum-Banso to discuss the
prospects of an upcoming iron ore exploration project in the area.
The engagement formed part of efforts to ensure transparency, build public trust, and involve local communities in decisions surrounding natural resource development. Officials from the Assembly and partnering institutions used the platform to educate residents on the objectives of the exploration exercise, its potential economic benefits, and the safeguards in place to protect the environment and local livelihoods.
Representatives from GIISDEC explained that the exploration project is a critical step toward assessing the commercial viability
of iron ore deposits in the district. They noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of
developing Ghana’s iron and steel industry to drive industrialisation, create jobs, and reduce reliance on imports.
Technical officers from GGSA provided further insights into the scientific processes involved in mineral exploration, assuring residents that all activities would be conducted in accordance with national regulations and international best practices. They emphasized that environmental protection, land restoration, and community safety would remain key priorities throughout the exercise.
Officials of the Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly highlighted the importance of the project to the local economy,
indicating that successful exploration could open up significant opportunities for employment, infrastructure development,
and increased revenue for the district.
Residents were encouraged to actively participate in the process, ask questions, and share concerns. Community members welcomed the engagement and expressed cautious optimism about the project, while also calling for continuous dialogue, transparency, and tangible benefits for the people of Adum-Banso. The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with stakeholders to ensure that any resource-based development is carried out responsibly and delivers long-term value to the community. The engagement marks an important step in aligning local development with national industrialisation goals, while ensuring that the voices of community members remain central to the process.
